Sepia Postcards: Tracing the Development of Photography & the Post Card Genre

PC-DS 1938_FRONT.jpg

Sepia-tinted photographs have long been embued with a sense of nostalgia in American culture. Simply typing the words "sepia postcards" into a common search engine yields dozens of results describing the "vintage," "artistic" nature of the cards. Even more results detail methods of reproducing the sepia effects through digital programs like Adobe Darkroom and Photoshop. Even as sepia filters are ubiquitous in digital photography today, its origins are often overlooked. This exhibit offers both a brief history of postcards and the sepia toning process in 19th and early 20th century photography, as illustrated by various artifacts within the collection.
